LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — A Lexington harm reduction organization has identified dangerous substances in drug samples from Fayette County.
Voices of Hope said it analyzed a large batch of syringes from Fayette County and found carfentanil, xylazine, medetomidine, and BTMPS.

The organization said this is its first batch of syringes it has tested, so it can’t report on trends yet.
About the adulterants:
- BTMPS is an industrial chemical and plastic stabilizer typically used to protect plastics from UV rays.
- Carfentanil is a potent fentanyl analog.
- Medetomidine is a veterinary tranquilizer associated with severe withdrawal symptoms.
- Xylazine is a veterinary tranquilizer associated with severe, sometimes necrotic, skin wounds.
“If you or someone else are experiencing abnormal symptoms such as a very rapid heartbeat, extreme mood swings, or wounds that are getting bigger or have a foul odor after using substances, it is important to seek medical care if you are able,” Voices of Hope said.
