His dying wish sought to help kids. 30 years later, that wish endures.

On an August afternoon in 1995, Peter Rubin gathered his closest friends in the living room of his home for the last time.

Rubin, a 48-year-old father of two children and a juvenile public defender in Madison, had been fighting a terminal cancer diagnosis for a year.

“The cancer had taken a toll,” recalled Randy Sproule, one of Rubin’s friends. “Peter told us that the chemotherapy and other treatments were no longer working — that the cancer had metastasized and that he knew the end was imminent.”…
