COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) – Rachelle Williams didn’t expect to become a full-time chef and baker. This career was cooked up because when she immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines she had a hard time finding a restaurant that served good Filipino food.
“So I started reading books, watching videos and learning how to cook. When I started cooking it motivated me because people started liking it. I was amazed because I know how to cook,” said Williams.
Now October is Filipino-American Heritage Month. It’s a time to celebrate the first landing of Filipinos on the continental U.S. on October 18th in the 1500’s. The celebration became an official U.S. holiday in 2009. Many Filipinos like Rachelle wanted to bring signature dishes from her native country to also share them with her community. When other customers show how much they enjoy the Filipino foods she cooks up, it pushes Rachelle to keep going…
