A skunk in Anderson County tested positive for rabies, exposing two dogs. What to know

Two dogs have been exposed to a skunk in Anderson County that has tested positive for rabies.

On Oct. 16, South Carolina health officials confirmed that a skunk found near Willford Road and Highway 187 South in Anderson County tested positive for rabies.

According to a press release, the two dogs exposed have been quarantined, and no human exposures have been reported in this incident.

How many rabies cases are there in SC?

  • There have been 83 cases of rabid animals statewide this year.
  • There have been six confirmed rabid animal cases in Andesron this year.
  • Since 2002, South Carolina has averaged approximately 144 positive cases a year.
  • In 2024, three of the 81 confirmed rabies cases in South Carolina were in Anderson County.
