CSPD: Shots fired incident at apartment leads to shelter-in-place, arrest

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A shelter-in-place was issued at the Montebello Garden Apartments on Friday night, Oct. 17, after reports were received of shots being fired in the area. Officers negotiated with a suspect locked in his apartment for a couple of hours before an arrest was made, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD).

Around 6:15 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to reports of shots fired in the area of 4300 Montebello Drive, near Austin Bluffs Parkway and North Academy Boulevard. As police were on the way to the scene, a second call indicated that additional shots had been fired, and muzzle flash was seen in an apartment.

According to CSPD, officers established a dialogue with the suspect, who was locked inside his apartment, as containment was set up and a shelter-in-place order was issued for the area.

Officers asked the man to come out of his apartment, but he refused, according to CSPD. The suspect was obviously drunk, according to police, and continued to refuse to come out or allow officers to remove firearms from the apartment. After around two hours of negotiating with the suspect, he agreed to leave the apartment and was taken into custody. The shelter-in-place was cancelled around 8:30 p.m…
