NYPD creates unit to address domestic violence, up 40% in NYC since pandemic

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The NYPD has created a unit to address domestic violence, which has seen a 40% increase in New York City since 2020.

The most common form of domestic violence that police officers are seeing is intimate partner violence, according to data from the NYPD. Mayor Eric Adams announced on Thursday that 450 police officers will be assigned to the newly created Domestic Violence Unit, streamlining how they respond to and support victims.

The NYPD vowed that the DV unit will get the same attention as gun and gang violence. Police officers in the unit will receive double the training on dealing with domestic violence cases, according to Adams.
