Debbie Harry Dreams of Florence Pugh for Blondie Biopic

Music icon Debbie Harry has her sights set on Oscar-nominated actress Florence Pugh to portray her in an upcoming Blondie biopic. Harry, 80, expressed her desire to The Times, stating, “If it were somebody like Florence Pugh, I would be in heaven. I just think she’s a great actor and she could do anything.”

This casting wish isn’t a one-sided affair. Coincidentally, Pugh herself revealed her interest in depicting Harry’s life and journey with Blondie during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2020. The “Thunderbolts” star enthusiastically remarked, “Blondie, just because she’s so cool.”

Harry, as the dynamic frontwoman of Blondie, was a pivotal force in the music industry during the 1970s and 1980s. The band was renowned for its groundbreaking sound, which seamlessly blended various genres.

Speaking to the L.A. Times, Harry reflected on Blondie’s influence: “I think that there was a time when it wasn’t done…when the styles weren’t blended.

If you did a reggae album, you did a reggae album, and if you did a rock album, you did a rock album. But then we started mixing in influences because we were so urban.

These were the influences that were around us [in New York City], and it just seemed normal.”

After the original lineup disbanded in 1982 following the release of their sixth album, “The Hunter,” Harry continued her musical career. Blondie has since reunited periodically and is anticipated to release a new album in Spring 2016.

Harry described the upcoming project as “very rock and roll,” while also featuring “really great dance music.” She emphasized the band’s enduring commitment to incorporating diverse sounds and styles, stating, “Blondie has always done that.

We’ve always embodied the present. So it feels like Blondie.”
