DeKalb Middle School sees success with program aimed to help students feel included

DEKALB COUNTY, Ind. (WPTA) – A local middle school launched Unified Sports to help students feel more included, and staff say it’s already proving to be powerful.

Unified programs bring together students with and without intellectual disabilities through different activities. They’ve been appearing across the country over the past couple years.

“Kids really struggle, right, with their own identities, and they struggle with, how do I accept kids who are different than me,” said Carrie Wisehart, DeKalb Middle School’s principal. “The Unified program just capitalizes on that.”…
