Skyline’s success exploded over weekend with 61K riders

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu’s Skyline rail saw strong ridership during its Segment 2 preview weekend as the City and County marked a major step in expanding the island’s public transit network.

The City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS) reported more than 61,000 total rides from Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 16 to 19.

Skyline debuts 4 new stops, making its way into the heart of Honolulu

This is how the numbers break down:

  • Thursday, Oct. 16, drew 11,879 riders.
  • This was followed by 10,471 on Friday.
  • Over the Fare-Free Weekend, 19,562 passengers boarded on Saturday.
  • 20,056 passengers joined on Sunday as families, commuters and visitors explored the new route.

The five-mile addition connects Skyline to key employment hubs near Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, Lagoon Drive and Māpunapuna industrial areas and the Kalihi Transit Center on Middle Street.
