Duke plans more investment in Durham, distances efforts from Durham Rising campaign

Duke’s Office of Community Affairs presented a slate of new community initiatives at Thursday’s Academic Council meeting, all aimed at deepening the University’s “purposeful partnerships” in Durham.

The proposals involve the recently established “Center for Community-Engaged Scholarship” and a multi-year economic mobility plan that will tie Duke’s hiring, construction and investments closer to the city it calls home.

President Vincent Price also spoke directly to the Durham Rising movement’s key demands — one of the few times the administration has publicly addressed the coalition that has been urging Duke to invest more in Durham and its employees…
