I’d be lying if I told you I was a big sports star in high school. I was in chess club. An older kid in the neighborhood taught me the game when I was in the 4th of 5th grade. I wonder if kids are still playing chess.
Well, it looks like I’ve found some proof that they are. I am at a meeting of the chess club at Erie’s Blasco Library. The club is open to kids ages 8 to 13. This is a place for young people to play in person against an opponent. It’s also a place where beginners can learn the game. The club was organized after someone called the library a few months ago asking about a chess club.
“If there’s interest, which there was with chess, we’re going to make that happen,” says Tammy Blount, the library’s assistant director of Literacy Services. “So, we got some chess boards, set up the program and a few kids came.”…
