City council delays vote on revoking Mobile bar’s business license

MOBILE, Ala. (NBC 15) — Mobile City Council members did not vote on revoking Phat Tuesday’s business license during their Tuesday meeting. Councilman CJ Small requested to delay the vote for one week. Several council members voiced concerns about taking such an extreme action. Councilman William Carroll said he’d like to review more information and consider other options. The council could suspend the license for a period of time or restrict the hours of operation.

“I hate to see anyone’s business license revoked. I hate to see anyone’s livelihood, especially when we as businesspeople work so hard to establish a business, to get it going, to make sure we’re providing for our families and for our friends. But as I said in pre-council, there has to be a consequence of action that’s taken when nothing’s being done to alleviate the problem,” said Councilman William Carroll.

Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s office proposed the move. According to city records, there have been 274 calls to the bar on Saint Stephens Road between January 2022 and July 2025, 23 of those calls were for shots fired. In 2019, Tito Smith was shot and killed inside Phat Tuesday. City records also state that on three occasions this summer alcohol was sold after the 2:00 a.m. state deadline or on a Sunday, in violation of ABC regulations and state law.
