City seeks to shed ‘No Fun Newark’ reputation, considers allowing entertainment venues downtown

Could downtown Newark ever again see a music venue like the legendary Stone Balloon?

Right now, no, thanks to the city’s zoning laws. However, an effort is underway to loosen the regulations around entertainment venues with the goal of attracting a concert hall, piano bar, comedy club or similar businesses to Newark.

“I’m sure everybody’s heard the ‘No Fun Newark’ moniker,” Planning Director Renee Bensley said. “We’d love to try and shake some of that.”…
