Tropical Storm Melissa Forms in Atlantic, Threatens Caribbean Nations
Tropical Storm Melissa has developed in the Atlantic and is projected to intensify, potentially reaching hurricane strength. While the continental United States is expected to remain outside of its path, Melissa poses a significant threat to several Caribbean nations.
The storm’s primary impact is anticipated to be felt in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Cuba, with Puerto Rico also facing potential effects.
Forecast Details:
As Melissa tracks across the Caribbean in the coming days, it is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous surf to the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Cuba. Forecasts indicate a dangerous 5 to 10 inches of rain could fall by Friday, with additional precipitation possible throughout the weekend.
Puerto Rico may experience heavy rain and gusty winds from Melissa’s outer bands on Thursday, Friday, and into the weekend. However, current projections suggest the most severe impacts of the storm will bypass the island.
Elevated water temperatures in the Caribbean, currently 3 to 4 degrees above average for this period, are expected to contribute to the storm’s strengthening. The Atlantic hurricane season officially continues until November 30th.
