TAMU-K launches new fiber optics training program with state workforce grant

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas A&M University–Kingsville is taking a major step toward connecting outlying communities across South Texas with the launch of a new fiber optics training program.

The initiative is being funded through the Texas Broadband Workforce Grant Program, which supports workforce development and digital access across the state. Broadband technology powers many of today’s essential innovations — including Wi-Fi and fiber optics — helping keep communities connected, particularly in areas where digital access is limited.

“The beautiful part about this is this is going to serve as a proof of concept for the entire state of Texas,” said Texas A&M–Kingsville President Robert Vela. “So think about developing the curriculum right here in Kingsville, Texas, to become a broadband technician that could be applied anywhere in the state of Texas.
