Club Car Wash withdraws proposal to build near North Main and Auburn streets in Rockford

ROCKFORD — A proposal to build a car wash near the Auburn and Main streets roundabout has been withdrawn by the developer after it faced organized pushback from residents in the area.

Club Car Wash has rescinded its application for a zoning change and a special-use permit to operate on the northwest quadrant of the Auburn and Main streets intersection, according to Scott Capovilla, the city’s planning and zoning manager. The proposal was slated to go before the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals tonight, and objectors were planning to fill City Hall to stand in opposition to the plan.

A coalition of business owners, residents and neighborhood groups called Save Our North End was raising issue with the proposal over concerns about increased traffic at an already crash-prone intersection, the affect on property values, and the aesthetics of a car wash near Veterans Memorial Circle and Greenwood Cemetery, among other issues…
