According to WalletHub’s new “Safest Cities in America” report, Detroit once again proved it’s a city that lives on the edge — literally and statistically. Out of the 182 cities studied, the Motor City cruised in as the 179th place, meaning there are only three other major cities in the country considered more dangerous.
Congratulations, Detroit, Michigan, you’re more dangerous than Baton Rouge, Memphis, and New Orleans. Not exactly the bragging rights we were hoping for, but hey, it’s a win.
How WalletHub Calculates Safety Rankings
The annual WalletHub study compared 182 cities across 41 key safety indicators — things like financial security, natural disaster risk, and, you know, whether you can leave your car parked overnight without donating your catalytic converter to the local economy. Detroit scored especially low in “Home and Community Safety,” which is a police way of saying “yikes.”

But before we pile on, let’s give Motown a little credit: we don’t have hurricanes. We don’t have earthquakes. We don’t have mudslides or falling iguana alerts. If danger were purely weather-based, Detroit would be a national treasure. It’s the people (and criminals) that make it exciting.
Michigan’s Other Cities: A Different Story?
Still, not every Michigan city fared so dramatically. One Mitten State municipality actually landed on WalletHub’s list of the Safest in America — proof that it’s not all sirens and insurance claims here in the Great Lakes State.
