San Diego Sheriff’s Office Urges Parents to Discuss Safe Driving with Teens During National Teen Driver Safety Week

National Teen Driver Safety Week takes place from October 19 to 25, 2025. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging parents and caregivers to talk with teens about safe driving. The campaign aims to help teens develop safe driving habits before they start driving on their own.

Car crashes are a leading cause of death for teenagers aged 15 to 18 in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 2,611 people died in 2023 in crashes involving teen drivers nationwide. In California, 465 deaths in 2023 were linked to crashes with drivers aged 20 or younger. This accounts for about 11.5% of all traffic deaths in the state.

The Sheriff’s Office asks parents to discuss risks like speeding, texting while driving, and not wearing seat belts. Teens should also understand the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. These conversations can help prevent crashes and save lives…
