Humane Society of Sarasota County expands lifesaving efforts beyond county lines

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – The Humane Society of Sarasota County is expanding its reach beyond local animal adoptions through programs that assist neighboring counties and provide advanced medical care for shelter animals.

The organization operates the TAILS program, which stands for Together Assisting in Lifesaving Services, to help neighboring counties increase their lifesaving efforts throughout Florida. David Morton, senior director of lifesaving services, said the program demonstrates the organization’s commitment to regional animal welfare.

The medical department provides advanced care

The shelter’s medical department handles all animal care from preventative treatments to advanced surgical procedures. Dr. Ashley Gillett, medical director, said the department performs spay and neuter surgeries, femoral head osteectomies, dental procedures, and amputations.

Recent cases include Bert, a dog pulled from Highlands County who received advanced surgical care, and Wisdom, a dog treated for a non-healing gunshot wound to her right hind leg.

Community programs address local needs

The organization runs a TNVR program for community cats, which involves trapping, neutering, vaccinating, and releasing feral cats. Officials said donations are needed to fund the program for next year…
