Greene County to no longer require annual renewals for senior property tax freeze

Seniors who qualify to have their property taxes effectively frozen in Greene County will no longer have to worry about filling out a renewal form every year. Starting in 2026, the process will change to ease the burden on seniors to maintain their tax credit and streamline the process for staff.

The tax freeze originated from state legislation, which counties were allowed to adopt, effectively freezing property taxes for homeowners 62 and older. Two bills, SB 190 and SB 756, established the parameters for counties to implement this credit and cleared up some initial confusion. Greene County became one of the first in the state to adopt the measure in 2023, and has already seen changes in the process as the credit process has been clarified.

The amount of tax credit to be received is the difference between a given year’s residential property tax and the tax on the residential property from the year in which the owner first applied and was eligible.
