Miami Family Seeks $10 Million in Damages After Daughter’s Boating Accident at Coconut Grove Sailing Club Camp

An 11-year-old girl’s summer camp experience at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club turned tragic when she was severely injured in a boating accident, prompting her parents to file a $10 million lawsuit against the club. According to WSVN, the girl, Catherine Viteri, was swimming on July 10 as part of a summer camp activity when she was struck by a motorboat operated by a camp counselor, resulting in serious lacerations to her right leg.

The complaint, filed in Miami-Dade Circuit Court, alleges that the camp counselor operating the motorboat, 21-year-old Myles Carter Holt, “lost track of the number and location of his campers” before entering the swimming area. “The photographs of her leg are so gory you couldn’t show them in a horror movie,” said Justin Shapiro, the attorney representing the Viteri family, in a statement obtained by WSVN. The Viteris’ lawsuit cites negligence in the camp’s failure to enforce safety protocols, adequately supervise children, and prevent boats from entering designated swimming areas.

As reported by NBC6, the aftermath of the incident left Catherine with permanent mutilation and disfiguring scars to her leg, as well as significant functional problems that she will contend with for the rest of her life. The Viteri family is not only seeking damages for their daughter’s catastrophic injuries and medical expenses, but they also hope that this lawsuit will lead to enhanced safety measures at the sailing club and other children’s programs…
