Footpath in Eastown used by Grand River Bands to be recognized with educational signage, historical marker

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A foot path in Grand Rapids used by members of the Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians is going to be recognized this month by local groups with educational signage.

More than 200 years ago, the footpath ran along what is today Fulton Street, Lake Drive and Robinson Road. In the 1800s, there was a trading post located on the path where Eastown is today.

The Grand River Bands of Ottawa Indians carried goods produced by hunters and farmers to trade over the 10-mile footpath, which linked their villages with those at the joining of the Grand and Thornapple Rivers…
