NEW ORLEANS — Federal prosecutors want to block Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s former bodyguard from having any contact with her without their attorneys present, according to a motion filed in court last week.
Cantrell and former New Orleans Police Officer Jeffrey Vappie are charged with 18 counts of conspiracy, wire fraud, obstruction of justice and false statements.
Cantrell and Vappie are charged with making false statements – Cantrell to a grand jury and Vappie to the FBI – to allegedly cover up a romantic relationship when they were each married to other people. They have both publicly denied having an affair, but in this latest court filing, prosecutors claim Vappie argued in August 2024 that he should be able to keep having contact with Cantrell “because of his special relationship with her.”…
