Firefighters from the Poudre Fire Authority (PFA) in Northern Colorado have completed specialized dementia education. The training was provided through a partnership with the nonprofit Dementia Together. Over several weeks, all PFA firefighters attended 12 separate sessions using the SPECAL® Method. This method is an evidence-based approach that helps first responders recognize and respond to individuals with dementia.
PFA Training Division Chief Tyson Barela stated that the training is important for improving patient care, safety, and communication during emergencies involving people with dementia. The SPECAL® Method, offered in the United States by Dementia Together, gives firefighters a practical framework for interacting with those affected by dementia. This can help reduce stress and support compassionate service for community members and their families.
According to post-training evaluations, all PFA respondents reported increased confidence in handling dementia-related calls. They described the training as helpful and informative.
