Community shares concern with proposed housing development in Mauldin

MAULDIN, S.C. (WSPA) – Mauldin City Council has approved new zoning for the Cottage Green housing development, which plans to build over 500 residential units despite public opposition.

The development, located next to the Spinx on Fork Shoals Road, will feature cottage-style duplexes and apartments with rents ranging from $1,300 to $2,300. The decision to rezone the area from general commercial to multifamily residential was made to attract a younger generation to the city, according to the Mayor Terry Merritt.

Merritt supported the development, stating, “If we’re going to bring the younger generation back, we’ve got to develop things for them to do and places to live.”…
