MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Sheriff Floyd Bonner is renewing his calls for more funding and a new jail, as 201 Poplar deals with a surge of arrests from the Memphis Safe Task Force.
“In the efforts of the federal government trying to help us, the unintended consequences was, ‘Okay, if you’re going to go out and arrest a bunch of people, then a bunch of people are going to come to jail. So, where do we put them? How do we feed them? How do we house them?’” said Sheriff Bonner.
201 Poplar has a capacity of 2,400 inmates; however, Sheriff Bonner says the current jail population is 2,940.
