WECT INVESTIGATES: A former Wilmington teacher’s fight for critical disability benefits

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A former Hoggard High School teacher battling breast cancer for the second time says she struggled to receive disability benefits from the North Carolina Retirement System while navigating cancer treatment and homelessness.

Jennifer Hall reached out to WECT in September about issues receiving disability benefits and a reimbursement check from the state for health insurance she didn’t need, but had paid for. Hall, who taught students how to become teachers at Hoggard after moving to Wilmington in 2021, was diagnosed with recurrent breast cancer in 2023.
