Suspect nabbed after stealing woman’s car from Elks Club and crashing in subdivision

A Leesburg man was arrested after stealing a car from the Elks Club only to crash it into a tree when being pursued by deputies.

Officers responded to the Elks Club, located at 804 Beecher St., for an auto theft involving 36-year-old Antonio Duran McCovery around 1:40 a.m. Saturday, according to an arrest report from the Leesburg Police Department. The vehicle’s owner had been inside the club for an hour and returned to find her 2016 Honda Pilot was not where she parked it.

The owner explained that she parked her vehicle at the back of the establishment. She still had her keys and did not lend her vehicle to anyone. If she was close enough to it with her keys, it could be unlocked by pressing a button on the handle, the report said.

She also had two phones inside the vehicle. She tracked the vehicle using the “Find My iPhone” feature, revealing it was at the intersection of Laurie Lane and 13th Street. Officers responded to the location and found the phones in a patch of grass north of the intersection. The vehicle was not there, the report said…
