San Antonio Regional Hospital, formerly known as San Antonio Hospital, has served Upland, California since 1907. The hospital first opened at San Antonio Avenue and Arrow Highway with 18 beds and five physicians. Dr. William Howard Craig worked as a general practitioner and surgeon for 37 years. His son, Dr. John Craig, also contributed to the hospital’s early operations.
As Upland’s population increased, the need for a larger hospital became clear. By 1922, the population had more than doubled. Dr. Craig sought support for expansion. Frances Mary Paul, a community member and patient, donated $75,000. This donation funded a new hospital on San Bernardino Road. The new San Antonio Community Hospital opened on July 30, 1924. It had 35 rooms, a 50-patient capacity, and a maternity wing for 20 babies.
The hospital expanded over the decades to meet regional needs. In 2015, it was renamed San Antonio Regional Hospital to reflect its broader services and service area.
