Ann Arbor Mother and Daughter Share Path to Nursing Through Washtenaw Community College

This December, Seema Awan will graduate from Washtenaw Community College (WCC) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. At 22, Seema is completing WCC’s nursing program, following the path her mother, Anna Awan, started ten years ago. Their story is being shared during WCC’s 60th anniversary to show the college’s role in educating multiple generations.

Seema graduated from Ann Arbor Huron High School in 2021 and began attending WCC soon after. She entered the nursing program in January 2024 and is now close to finishing. Seema says her mother’s example influenced her decision to study nursing.

Anna Awan decided to become a nurse after her newborn daughter received care in the NICU. The family moved from Virginia to Ann Arbor in 2015 for her husband’s job, which allowed Anna to enroll at WCC. She balanced her studies with family life and earned an Associate Degree in Nursing from WCC, a Bachelor’s from Eastern Michigan University, and a graduate degree from the University of Michigan. Anna now works as a Primary Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital…
