AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Augusta leaders held the first of four workshops Thursday to address the city’s $21 million budget deficit.
The deficit became known about a week ago, and city leaders are now considering several options to close the gap.
Property tax increase proposed
One proposed solution from the city administrator is a 2-mill property tax increase. The city administrator said that for a $100,000 home, that would mean an extra $70 per year. For a $200,000 home, the increase would be $150 annually.
If commissioners approve the property tax increase, the administrator said it would bring in roughly $16 million.
Service cuts also considered
Commissioners are also discussing across-the-board cuts to nearly all city departments and other nonprofits…
