CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Dozens of patrons gathered at Gene’s Haufbrau in West Ashley, all curious to answer the decades-old question: “What’s in the safe?”
“It all started from us wanting to get rid of the safe, actually, because we wanted to put a new merch case in there,” said current manager and owner Liam Tyrell. “And then it just turned into this whole crazy idea of maybe we’ll open it, and then it turned into a crowdsourced opening and all that, and we’ll see how it goes.”
The bar first opened in 1952. While ownership of the establishment has changed hands over the decades, one mystery remained: an old safe, locked and left in the bar by the original owner…
