Family of veteran who died inside DeKalb County jail files lawsuit

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The family of a DeKalb County Jail inmate who died in custody last year has filed a federal lawsuit, claiming he was denied medical aid for hours.

Christon Collins, a U.S. Army veteran, died in March 2024 after taking fentanyl. The suit, which was filed on Monday, names Sheriff Melody Maddox, three detention officers and an EMT, claiming they violated his civil rights by not actively responding to Collins’ medical emergency…
