RICHLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — On Saturday, amateur and advanced birders alike will join Seth Chapman, a Kalamazoo-area birder, for a trip to Grassy Lake to witness the beginning of sandhill crane migration in West Michigan.
“This is a great opportunity to take pause,” Seth Chapman, event organizer and local birder, said. “Ground yourself in observing nature, and step back into the world a little bit more mindfully.”

Meeting at an Alamo Township carpool lot at 5:30 p.m. before driving over to Grassy Lake, Chapman encourages anyone interested in the event to register online and bring a camping chair along with them.
“We’ll watch the cranes until 7 p.m. or so,” Chapman said.
The natural environment of Grassy Lake and its surrounding land near Gull Lake make it an ideal spot for sandhill cranes meeting in large flocks — or roosting — ahead of their migration south…
