PPD: Woman arrested in Stratford St. child death

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A woman has been arrested and faces a half-dozen charges in connection to the May death of a 5-year-old on Stratford Street, Portsmouth Police said Friday.

Ekara Mikkia Cowles, 31, has been charged with the following:

  • Accessory to felony homicide
  • Accessory to malicious wounding
  • Accessory to felony child neglect
  • Accessory to cruelty to a child
  • Accessory to fail to secure medical for injured child
  • Accessory to contributing to the delinquency of a child

On May 28, officers responded to a call for an unresponsive child in the 300 block of Stratford Street, according to Portsmouth Police, who said the child was taken to a local hospital, where they later died.

Cowles is currently in the custody of the Portsmouth Sheriff’s Office awaiting arraignment, Portsmouth Police said…
