Assistant track coach in Wisconsin charged with alleged inappropriate relationship with student-athlete

GREENFIELD, Wis. (WFRV) – A high school assistant track coach in Wisconsin was arrested after authorities say he engaged in an alleged inappropriate relationship with a student-athlete.

According to officials, 23-year-old Bennet Schmitz was taken into custody in Schofield on Oct. 20 in connection with incidents that reportedly occurred during the spring of 2024.

The Greenfield School District said Schmitz served as an assistant track coach during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 spring seasons. He was not a licensed educator and did not hold a teaching position in the district.

As part of the district’s hiring process, all employees and volunteers who work with students must pass a criminal background check, which Schmitz passed before his employment. The district noted it is aware of only one student involved in the alleged inappropriate conduct…
