Kalamazoo food drive to support families ahead of SNAP pause

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The federal government has now been shut down for 25 days. With no end in sight, Michigan is preparing to pause its SNAP benefits, leaving 1.4 million families without food assistance beginning in November.

While the federal shutdown continues to amplify the rising concern of food insecurity, it’s also affecting many of the food pantries in our area and their funding as well.

‘Lifeline’: SNAP recipients fearful of future amid program pause

The nonprofit Jesus Loves Kalamazoo is hosting a food drive Saturday with the goal of providing nutritious resources for up to 600 families and reducing the the strain on other food pantries.

Local schools have been organizing food collections for the past three weeks to contribute to Saturday’s food drive. The nonprofit collected additional donations on Friday. Now, they have nearly 6,000 pounds of potatoes, 2,000 pounds of apples and 19 other healthy food options for families…
