Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop – The Bobbie Review | Coalition Eats

Today, we review The Bobbie from Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop. In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, many chains offer turkey sandwiches with various Thanksgiving side dishes as condiments. Most chains that introduce these sandwiches do so on a limited basis, leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday. The Bobbie is Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop’s Thanksgiving-themed sandwich offering. It is a sandwich that is offered hot or cold. When it comes to The Bobbie, the difference is that it is a year-round regular offering from Capriotti’s. We are assessing the cold version of The Bobbie.

Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop is a growing chain in the U.S. It was founded in 1976 by Lois and Alan Margolet in Wilmington, Delaware. Lois and Alan named the place after their grandfather, Philip Capriotti. At the time of this assessment, there are approximately 175 locations. Lois created The Bobbie, named for the siblings’ Aunt Bobbie. Aunt Bobbie would make sandwiches for her family from turkey and Thanksgiving leftovers—thus, The Bobbie was born.

The Experience

For this assessment, the scoring is very similar to what we do with other turkey sandwiches.

  • Meat (Turkey) 4 points
  • Bread: 2 points
  • Condiments: 2 points
  • Intangibles: 2 points

Meat

When it comes to turkey at Capriotti’s, it simply is a cut above the competition. This is not sliced deli meat; it is actually pulled from a roasted turkey (on premises). The meat itself is a mix of white and dark meat. It’s very flavorful, moist, and tender. When the turkey is the star of the turkey sandwich, that is always a good thing.

Score: 3.50 out of 4.00 points

Usually, I find the bread to be the Achilles heel of the Capriotti’s sandwiches. That being said, the sandwich for this assessment was better than my previous experience at Capriotti’s. In general, I find their bread to be a little softer than I prefer. In this case, I found the crust to be better than I had previously assessed.

Capriotti’s employs a technique in which they hollow out the inside of the roll. In particular, this allows for more meat to be better held in the sandwich.

Score: 0.75 out of 2.00 points

Condiments

The stuffing had a rich and savory quality that stood out. It definitely seemed to be chicken-based. In terms of flavor, it reminded me of Stove-Top brand stuffing, which I happen to think is quite good as well.

The cranberry sauce is pretty good. It contains some whole berries. It was on the sweeter side.

Score: 1.25 out of 2.00 points

Intangibles

One thing I look for in any sandwich is whether the overall experience exceeds the sum of the components. In this case, I would say the experience is about even. The components all taste well together, but I didn’t get an elevated experience. Generally, with these Thanksgiving sandwiches, the cranberry sauce can overpower them, but the good news is that the turkey and stuffing have enough flavor to mitigate it.

The portion delivered on this size sandwich was filling. This wasn’t a messy sandwich either…
