Salem Health Orthopedics in Oregon has introduced new technology for treating severe ankle pain, particularly in patients with post-traumatic arthritis. Kent Emry, who fractured his ankle seven years ago and later developed chronic pain, underwent ankle replacement surgery at the facility in early 2023. Dr. Justin Brohard, a foot and ankle surgeon, performed the procedure, which involved removing damaged bone and cartilage and implanting a metal and plastic joint. This method aims to preserve surrounding ligaments and tendons.
Dr. Brohard stated that the main goal of the surgery is to relieve pain while maintaining joint motion and function. He reported that the technology is about 95% effective and typically lasts 10 to 15 years before a revision may be necessary. Emry, who was 52 at the time, said he could walk soon after the procedure and reported being pain-free during follow-up visits in 2024.
Emry’s case was the first time Dr. Brohard used this specific implant at Salem Health during a clinical trial. After his recovery, Emry supported the hospital’s approval of the implant for wider use.
