WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) — Crews are expected to put the finishing touches on the new Fruit Ridge Avenue bridge, bringing a monthslong project to an end.
But before the bridge opens to traffic next week, drivers in Walker should anticipate another closure. Starting at 8 p.m. Friday, westbound I-96 will close entirely at Fruit Ridge Avenue. The highway closure will continue through 6 a.m. Monday.
Businesses and drivers ready for Fruit Ridge bridge to open
Work began this spring to replace the old two-lane bridge, which was built in 1961.
“As the decades passed, the bridge began to show its age,” Walker Mayor Gary Carey said. “Those who traveled it daily, especially the residents and businesses in this area, knew just how much this replacement was needed. You did not have to be an engineer to know it was time to replace it.”…
