Heavy Rain Returns Sunday, Cooler Days and a Chilly Halloween Ahead

Weekend Outlook: An upper-level trough and low pressure will move through Alabama on Sunday. Saturday will be partly to mostly cloudy, but still pleasant with highs in the upper 70s.

The system will move into Alabama on Sunday, bringing scattered showers and a few thunderstorms. High temperatures will be in the upper 60s on Sunday afternoon.

Rain totals could be around 1 to 2 inches or more, helping with the ongoing drought. This could lead to minor flooding issues. WPC has highlighted all of Central Alabama in a Level 1/4 Marginal Risk for flash flooding.

Next Week’s Outlook: The low will move east of Alabama on Monday with lingering rain through midday, and then a few showers in the afternoon with highs in the upper 60s.

A cold front will move toward the state on Tuesday, accompanied by a few showers and highs in the lower 70s. The cold front will move across Alabama on Wednesday with isolated showers and slightly cooler highs in the mid-60s.

High pressure will build across the Southeast U.S. on Thursday and Friday, sending in a much colder airmass. Expect some clouds on Thursday and plenty of sunshine on Friday with highs in the lower to mid-60s. Lows will be in the mid-30s to lower 40s. This will make for a chilly Halloween!

Football Forecasts: The weather will be great for the Magic City Classic on Saturday at 2:30 PM. Kickoff temperatures will be in the 70s under a mostly cloudy sky. Samford also kicks off at 2:30 in Homewood with temperatures in the 70s and some clouds. Alabama is at South Carolina at 2:30 with sunshine and 60s. Auburn is at Arkansas where it will be rainy and temperatures in the 60s.

Tracking the Tropics: Tropical Storm Melissa is moving through the Central Caribbean and is expected to drift northwest to west over the next five days. Conditions are favorable for slow strengthening, and Melissa is forecast to reach hurricane status this weekend between Jamaica and Hispaniola, then strengthen into a Category 4 major hurricane early next week south of Jamaica. Melissa is forecast to drift to the west, and this will bring devastating hurricane conditions to Jamaica for a few days. Forecast models are trending toward the hurricane making a right turn after Wednesday and moving north over Cuba as a significant hurricane.
