Pumpkin Patrol: Ham radio operators hit the airwaves to keep the thruway safe

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Halloween is right around the corner, and local volunteers are gearing up to keep drivers safe on the NYS Thruway.

Amateur Radio operators from Wayne and Ontario Counties are teaming up with New York State Police for a long-running safety tradition: Pumpkin Patrol. While trick-or-treaters hit the streets, volunteers like David Taylor hit the airwaves.

“The Thruway Troop T thought you know, amateurs are very dependable in their communications, and why don’t we use those guys?” said Taylor. “So starting in 1991, I’ve been doing the Pumpkin Patrol from that time.”…
