It features venerable institutions – the American Museum of Natural History, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and The Juilliard School, to name a few – as well as attractions established in more recent decades, like the High Line.
City & State’s Trailblazers in Arts & Culture, written and researched in partnership with journalist Lon Cohen, highlights individuals who are crafting the next chapter of New York’s multifaceted cultural story. Of course, major arts institutions don’t have a monopoly on driving and documenting culture, and this list includes a variety of mid-sized organizations and smaller startups as well as a range of social services nonprofits, business improvement districts and education organizations that are all contributing to New York’s arts output.
