It’s that spooky time of year again! Time to get the kids ready and get them to the Halloween extravaganza in the Manito Park neighborhood, or wherever the Trick or Treating is best in the Inland Northwest. The question every year is, will it rain? A couple of times the question should have been, will it snow?! All Hallow’s Eve is one of the holidays that a plan with the weather in mind is important.
Weather records for the Spokane area go back to 1889. In the 136 Spokane Halloweens that have been chronicled, 51 have had rainfall. In the last 50 years, it’s happened 23 times. In the last 25 years, it’s happened 13 times, so it is getting more and more frequent.
Has it snowed? Only 4 times since records have been kept. The poor kids and their families had to endure over an inch and a half in 1971. It hasn’t snowed in Spokane on the holiday since 1994. The most rain was just under an inch, at .89 inches in 1933.
Since 1991, the chances of rain falling in the Inland Empire is a little over 1 in 3 at 36.1%. The chances of snow showing up are less than 1 in 20 at 4.7%. But if either of them happen to you and your family, you’ll never forget it…
