“Trailblazer who broke barriers,” CMPD’s first black officer dies at 83

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department announced the sad news of the passing of their first black officer.

Joseph Wilson Jr. was hired by the Mecklenburg County Police Department before the city and county merged.

“Officer Wilson was a trailblazer who broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of law enforcement officers,” CMPD wrote. “The impact that he had on his department is one that will never be forgotten, and his legacy will continue to inspire all who wear the badge and strive to make a difference through service and integrity.”…
