Gov. Ivey’s office issues statement amid SNAP benefit halt

This evening, the Office of Governor Kay Ivey released a statement after The Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) announced Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will be suspended in November due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

“As Alabama DHR noted, SNAP benefits are 100% federally funded, and therefore, U.S. Food and Nutrition Services controls the issuance of these benefits on EBT cards. While the state does not have extra money to do Congress’ job, Governor Ivey hopes to see U.S. Senate Democrats get on board to reopen the federal government,” said Gina Maiola, communications director for Gov. Ivey’s office.

In a press release issued Monday, DHR said it received official guidance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) on Friday, October 24, 2025.
