John Cleary, who was wounded by Ohio National Guard during deadly Kent State shootings in 1970, dies at 74

CLEVELAND — John Cleary, who was among nine Kent State University students wounded by the Ohio National Guard during the deadly events of May 4, 1970, has died at the age of 74.

According to an obituary, Cleary passed away Saturday at his Pittsburgh area home “surrounded by his loving family.” A cause of death was not given.

Cleary was just 19 years old in 1970 when campus protests erupted against the Nixon administration’s bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam War. On May 4, the National Guard opened fire on a group of hundreds of demonstrators, killing four students and wounding nine others. None of those who were shot were armed…
