Dan Tyminski at The Ark: A Masterclass in Modern Bluegrass

I’ve spent plenty of time in Michigan, but somehow this was my first time seeing a show at The Ark in Ann Arbor — and what a way to start. The Ark is an incredible venue; intimate, warm, and built for real music lovers. There wasn’t a bad seat in the house. We had general admission tickets and sat about three rows back from the stage, just off to the right, and it honestly felt like we were part of the performance.

From start to finish, Dan Tyminski and his band were flawless. Every song hit — from Man of Constant Sorrow to Hey Brother, to the tunes he recorded with Alison Krauss. Each one was played with heart and precision, the kind of energy that only comes from a lifetime in the music.

My bluegrass roots run deep. I grew up hearing my grandpa, Dave More Sr., and my uncles pickin’ at our old campsite and during every holiday gathering. So seeing one of the true voices of modern bluegrass live hit close to home. Dan’s voice has carried the sound of bluegrass across the world — especially with Hey Brother, his collaboration with Avicii that’s racked up billions of streams while keeping that pure, soulful edge that makes bluegrass timeless.

And the man himself? Still as down-to-earth as they come. After the show, his wife Elise worked the merch table while Dan took the time to meet everyone — shaking hands, taking pictures, signing autographs. He was kind enough to sign my vinyl copy of God Fearing Heathen, and I ended up going back for a CD version so we could listen on the way home.

This concert was also a fundraiser for The Ark’s 60th anniversary, and it felt like everyone in that room — artists and fans alike — shared the same appreciation for music that means something. If you ever get the chance to see a show at The Ark, or see Dan Tyminski live anywhere, take it. You’ll leave with your heart full and a new appreciation for what makes this music so special…
