Porch pirates cost Alabama consumers $212 million

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — A brazen porch pirate was captured on video taking multiple packages from a home on Old Shell Road in Mobile. The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office posted the surveillance video asking for tips to help identify the person. Investigators believe it’s a man dressed as woman, who may be connected to similar crimes in Mississippi.

“It’s a crime of opportunity. It’s a low-risk crime,” said SafeWise Senior Managing Editor Rebecca Edwards.

According to the 8th annual SafeWise Package Theft Report released earlier this month, porch pirates cost consumers $15 billion in the last year with an estimated 250,000 incidents every day. Florida was ranked the 4th worst state in the nation for package theft with 17,583 thefts happening every day resulting in $984,168,232 in losses. Alabama came in 21st with consumer losses at $212 million and an estimated 3,617 packages stolen per day…
