Signs say walk, but students scoot on

Duke’s recent demarcation of dismount zones asks students to “walk their wheels” on Bryan Center Plaza. But students say the signage — while a nice idea — is not followed and even less frequently enforced.

Duke Parking and Transportation distinguishes East Campus Quad, the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, Abele Quad, B.C. Plaza and the Athletic Department campus as “dismount zones” for scooters and other vehicles. The dismount zone signage in B.C. Plaza was installed over the summer, with graphics prohibiting the use of skateboards, scooters, bicycles and onewheels in the area.

But students on B.C. Plaza said that just because there is a sign does not mean the rule will be necessarily obeyed…
